Do I Need to Purchase Extra Insurance?
You are never required to buy extra coverage. Every move already includes basic protection for free, so the honest answer is that "extra" insurance is optional, and whether it is worth it comes down to what you are moving and how you would feel if something valuable got damaged. Here is a straightforward way to decide.
Start with what you already have
By law, every licensed Illinois mover includes a baseline level of protection at no charge, called Released Value Protection. It pays $0.60 per pound, per item, based on weight rather than value.
That works fine for heavy, everyday furniture. Where it falls short is on light, expensive things. If a five-pound laptop worth $2,000 were damaged, basic coverage would pay $3, because it follows the weight, not the price. (For the full breakdown of how that math works, see our post on standard liability coverage.) The short version: the free basic coverage is real, but it is thin for anything valuable that does not weigh much.
The upgrade is Full Value Protection, available for an added fee, which bases our responsibility on your items' actual value, repair or replacement instead of a flat per-pound figure. The question is simply whether your belongings justify it.
Four questions that tell you the answer
Instead of guessing, ask yourself these.
What would it cost to replace everything? Picture the whole truck gone tomorrow. If replacing it all out of pocket would genuinely hurt, extra coverage is probably worth it.
Do you own light-but-expensive things? Flat-screen TVs, laptops, designer clothing, high-end kitchen gear, all of it weighs almost nothing and costs a fortune to replace. These are exactly the items basic weight-based coverage protects poorly, and the single best reason to upgrade.
Does your home insurance already cover moves? This is the one people forget. Some homeowners and renters policies include transit coverage for your belongings while they are being moved. A two-minute call to your insurance agent can tell you whether you are already covered, and save you from paying for it twice.
Are you moving specialty items? A piano, a safe, or delicate antiques get our most careful handling, but their value alone often makes full protection the sensible call.
We will help you weigh it
There is no single right answer here, only the right answer for your move. During your free estimate, we are glad to go through your inventory, explain what each level would cost, and give you an honest recommendation rather than a hard sell. Plenty of customers moving ordinary household goods stick with the included coverage and are perfectly happy. Others with a houseful of electronics and art upgrade and sleep better for it.
Either way, you should decide with clear information, not pressure. Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com to talk it through, or read more in our FAQ. We will make sure you land on the coverage that fits what you are moving and what you are comfortable with.
