What If My Move Is Delayed Due to Unforeseen Circumstances?
Even a well-planned move can hit something you did not see coming: a lake-effect snowstorm, a jam on the Kennedy, a freight elevator that suddenly is not available. After four decades of moving Chicago, we have seen just about every version of "unforeseen," and we have a calm, straightforward way of handling each one. The two things that matter most are communication and keeping the crew productive. Here is how it works, depending on where the delay comes from.
If the delay is on our end
Sometimes the holdup is ours: heavy traffic, bad weather, or the rare mechanical issue. When that happens, you hear from us right away. We will call with an updated arrival time rather than leaving you wondering, and our dispatch team watches road and weather conditions through the day so our drivers can route around the worst of it.
Just as important: if we are running late, that is on us, not on your bill. Your hourly time starts when our crew starts working your move, so a delay in getting to you does not come out of your pocket. And if a truck ever has an issue, we work quickly to get another one out to you and keep your move going.
If the delay is on your end
Other times the holdup is on your side: the previous owners have not fully cleared out, your closing ran two hours long, the building's dock is tied up. We will absolutely work with you through it, and here is the honest part you should know going in.
Because a local move is billed hourly, the crew is on the clock while they are on-site, including time spent waiting. They are reserved for you and standing by, so that time counts. What we do to keep it fair is put the time to use: if we are waiting on building access, we get a head start on packing, wrapping, and disassembly, so the clock is buying real progress rather than idle time. And there is never a surge or "difficult day" rate. Our pricing does not change based on how the day goes, so a delay never adds a penalty charge on top.
The practical takeaway: the smoothest, most affordable move is one where your end is ready when we arrive. If you sense a delay coming, tell us as early as you can and we will plan around it.
The team you want when things go sideways
Since 1982, we have handled nearly every "unforeseen" scenario a Chicago move can throw at us, and the value of experience shows most on the days that do not go to plan. Our crews are trained to stay calm and productive through a delay, so the moment the obstacle clears, we finish strong.
If your move looks like it might hit a snag, call us at (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com and we will help you work through it, or read more in our FAQ. Whatever the day throws at us, odds are we have handled it before.
