What Happens If It Snows on My Wilmette Moving Day?
What Happens If It Snows on My Wilmette Moving Day?
Last updated: October 2026
Wilmette can declare a parking ban on all public streets after a snowfall. In past storms, the ban ran for 24 hours after the snow stopped or until Village crews finished. If a ban is on, the truck may need to load from your driveway, so check for village alerts the day before a winter move.
Snow is a fact of life on the North Shore. Wilmette sits right on the lake, and winter moves here can run into weather that doesn't show up in the city. The good news is that most snow problems are parking problems, and parking problems can be planned for, usually with nothing more complicated than a shoveled driveway and a quick check of the village website the night before.
What a snow ban means
When Wilmette declares a snow parking ban, cars can't park on public streets so plows can clear them. That includes moving trucks. If your move falls during a ban, the truck can't use the street the way it normally would.
The driveway option
If a ban is on, the truck may need to load from your driveway. Before a winter move, think about whether that works.
Is the driveway long enough? The truck needs room to fit.
Is it clear? Keep it shoveled and salted.
Is the surface solid? Ice and slush make loading slower.
Are there low branches? Snow-heavy branches can hang lower than usual.
Checking for alerts
Check for village alerts the day before your move. If a ban looks likely, call us and we'll talk through the plan.
Getting the house ready
Shovel the walks. The path from the door to the truck should be clear.
Salt the steps. Ice is the biggest risk for the crew carrying heavy things.
Lay down mats inside. Snow and slush come in on boots, even with floor protection.
Floors, door frames, and stairs get protected on every move, at no charge. Read how we protect floors and homes.
Protecting your things
Cold and wet weather can be hard on furniture. Moving blankets pad your furniture for free during every move, and shrink wrap helps keep moisture out. Electronics and pianos are sensitive to big temperature swings, so give them time to warm up before you turn them on or play them.

Other North Shore towns
Snow rules vary by town. Northbrook police can activate a street parking ban during a snowstorm, and vehicles left on the street during a ban can be ticketed or towed. Glenview bans overnight parking on all public streets from 2 to 6 a.m. between December 1 and March 31. Winnetka allows on-street parking from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. unless signs say otherwise.
