Can You Move Me Out of a Third-Floor Walk-Up Apartment?
Can You Move Me Out of a Third-Floor Walk-Up Apartment?
Last updated: October 2026
Every week.
Chicago is a walk-up city. Greystones in Lincoln Park. Three-flats all over Lakeview. Vintage courtyard buildings up and down Edgewater. If you rent in this city, there's a good chance your apartment sits at the top of a few flights of narrow stairs with a landing that turns tighter than any couch was designed for.
We know those stairwells. Walk-ups are part of the everyday work behind our moving services. Here's how a third-floor move actually works.
More hands on the stairs
On a walk-up job, we usually send three or more movers. Stairs change the math. Two people can carry a dresser across a flat floor all day. Down three flights with a turn at every landing, the job needs a third person who spots, guides, and takes over when the angle changes.
The right gear for the climb
Our crews carry with lift straps and shoulder dollies. Lift straps put the weight on the shoulders and legs instead of fingertips, which keeps heavy pieces steady and close on the way down. It's the difference between a controlled carry and a slow tumble.
Before the first piece moves, the stairs get covered and the railings and door frames get protected. Your landlord's woodwork and the hallway walls get the same care your furniture does. You can see what that protection includes in our post on how we protect floors and homes.
Making pieces fit
Most furniture that came up the stairs can go down them. Sometimes it needs help. Beds, tables, and other big pieces come apart to clear tight turns, then go back together at your new place. That's always included in the hourly rate.
When the stairs win
Every so often, a piece truly won't make the turn. Sectionals are the usual suspect, along with oversized mattresses and armoires that came in before the stairwell got repainted three times. When that happens, our hoisting and crane service brings the piece out through a window or over a balcony instead. It's planned, padded, and controlled, and it beats forcing a piece down a staircase that wasn't built for it.
What it means for your estimate
Stairs aren't a separate fee with us. They're part of the hourly work, so a third floor takes more time on the clock than a ground floor, but it doesn't add a stair charge on top. Our post on fees for stairs and long carries explains it.
For a sense of timing, a typical one-bedroom local move runs three to five hours door to door. Studios take less. Two-bedrooms take more. In a walk-up, the stairs are a big part of that range.
When you call for an estimate, tell us the floor at both ends, how the stairs turn, and which pieces you're worried about. That's how the crew shows up with the right number of people and the right plan.
Your part
Pack, and keep the path clear. Boxes stacked near the door, the hallway empty, and any fragile items marked. That's it. The stairs are our job.
If you're in Lakeview, our post on moving into a Lakeview 3-flat covers that neighborhood specifically. For everyone else, our apartment moving service is where this question lives in short form.
