The same way any move does. We estimate based on the actual size and complexity of the move.

There's no senior surcharge. No special pricing tier either. A senior move is priced like every other move we do. What makes senior moves different isn't the rate. It's what the move usually involves, and that's what shapes the number.

What goes into the estimate

How much is moving. A downsize usually moves less than the house holds, but the estimate depends on what's actually going on the truck.

How many stops. Senior moves often go to more than one place. There's the new home, a family member's house, and a donation center. Each stop adds time. Our post on split deliveries during a senior move explains how that works.

How many days. Many senior moves are spread over several days. Costs are quoted for the actual crew time, and spreading the work out doesn't add a surcharge.

Packing. Packing is the most-used add-on for senior moves. Packing labor and materials are charged separately, and you choose how much we pack. Our post on packing help for seniors covers the options.

Travel and access. Local moves are hourly, and moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. Elevators, stairs, and long hallways at a retirement community all take time on the clock.

What's already included

Some things never cost extra. Moving blankets for your furniture are always free during the move. Taking apart beds and tables and putting them back together is included in the hourly rate. Floors and door frames get protected at both ends.

What families can do to keep costs in line

Decide what's going before moving day. Sorting while the crew waits is the most expensive way to sort, because every minute spent deciding about a lamp in the hallway is a minute the whole crew is on the clock.

Mark items by destination. If some things go to family and some to donation, tag them ahead of time so the crew doesn't have to ask.

Pack what you're comfortable packing. Partial packing lets the family handle the easy things while we pack the fragile ones.

Ask about storage for the undecided. If nobody's decided about a piece, storage can hold it instead of moving it twice. Storage is billed monthly, or daily for short stays.

What doesn't change the price

Like every move we do, there's no deposit to book, estimates are free, and our pricing stays the same all year.
