How Far Ahead Should I Book a Piano Move?
How Far Ahead Should I Book a Piano Move?
Last updated: October 2026
Two weeks is comfortable for a standalone piano move. Same-week is often possible. If the piano is part of a larger move, book the whole thing together.
That's the short answer. Simple enough. Here's why the timing works that way, and how to make sure your piano gets the date you want.
Why two weeks is comfortable
Two weeks gives everyone room to plan. We can ask about the piano and both locations, figure out the stairs and the path, and decide whether the job needs a hoist. You have time to clear the room, book your tuner for after the move, and sort out building rules if there are any.
It also gives you the best shot at the exact day you want. Popular dates fill up first.
When you're short on time
Same-week piano moves are often possible. If you've just found out the piano has to go, call anyway. We'll tell you what's open. A closing date that moved up, a buyer who wants the house empty sooner, or a landlord who needs the unit back early can all turn a relaxed plan into a rush, and that's exactly when a quick phone call is worth making. Our last minute moving service covers short-notice moves of every kind, and our post on whether you can really book movers for today explains how quick-turnaround bookings work.
When the piano is part of a bigger move
If you're moving the whole house, don't book the piano separately. Book the whole thing together. The piano becomes part of the plan for the day, the crew knows about it from the start, and nothing gets scheduled twice.
For a full home move, two weeks is a good lead time. More notice never hurts.
When a hoist is involved
This is the one case where extra notice really pays off.
If the piano can't take the stairs, it may need to come in or out through a window or over a balcony. Hoists take more planning, so give yourself more lead time. Read what if my piano won't fit up the staircase.
Moving out of state?
Long-distance piano moves need more lead time than local ones. Read how far in advance to book a long-distance move and see our long-distance piano moving service.
What to have ready when you call
The piano. Upright, baby grand, or grand.
Both addresses. With floors and stairs at each end.
Your date. And how flexible it is.
Anything unusual. A tight turn, a narrow door, or a building with move rules.
Booking a tuner
Book your tuner at the same time you book the move. A tuner usually needs the piano to settle in its new home first, so pick a date a little after the move.
Pricing
Piano moves are priced by piano type, stairs, and distance. Read how much does piano moving cost in Chicago.
