How Fast Can a Mini Move Be Done?
How Fast Can a Mini Move Be Done?
Last updated: October 2026
Most mini moves wrap up in two to three hours, door to door.
That's from the moment the crew arrives to the moment the last box is set down at the new place. Studios, a few rooms, a handful of big pieces. Small moves move fast.
They're also the easiest moves to fit in on short notice, which is the other kind of fast. More on that below.
What makes a mini move faster
Being packed. This is the big one. If every box is taped and stacked near the door when the crew arrives, the clock barely has to run. Half-packed rooms slow everything down.
A clear path. Empty hallways, open doors, and nothing in the way between your stuff and the truck.
An elevator, or a ground floor. Walk-ups take longer. They're still everyday work for us, but stairs add time.
Parking close by. If the truck can park near your door, every trip is shorter. Many Chicago blocks need a parking permit to hold space for the truck, and we'll tell you before moving day if yours does.
What can slow it down
The same things in reverse. A fourth-floor walk-up. A long walk from the truck. A building with a slow freight elevator or a tight move window. Furniture that has to come apart to get through the door.
None of those are separate fees. Taking furniture apart and putting it back together is always included in the hourly rate. They just add minutes to the clock.
How fast you can book
Fast. Mini moves are the easiest moves to fit in on short notice, because they don't need a full day. When a crew frees up, a small move often fits right into the gap.
Same-day is often possible during business hours. We move seven days a week, every day except Christmas and New Year's. Our post on booking movers for today explains how to get it done.
Time and cost
Mini moves are hourly. Like every job we do, they have a 2-hour minimum, and since most wrap up in two to three hours, the minimum covers a lot of them. In the Chicago area, moving companies also charge at least one hour for travel. Our post on how much a small move costs in Chicago covers the rest.
Quick checklist for a fast mini move
- Everything packed and labeled
- Boxes stacked near the door
- Path cleared at both ends
- Elevator or parking sorted out ahead of time
- Someone there to unlock the door at the new place
Do that, and two to three hours is easy. Skip it, and even a studio can turn into an afternoon, because the crew ends up waiting on tape and boxes and parking while the hourly clock keeps running in the background. Small prep pays off.
Fast, small moves are what our mini moving service does every day. It's one of our moving services.
