Highland Park Movers. A Guide to the North Shore Estate Move

Highland Park Movers: A Guide to the North Shore Estate Move
Highland Park is one of Chicagoland's most established North Shore villages: about 30,000 residents, on the lake, with a housing stock that spans lakefront estates to historic downtown condos to family neighborhoods. It's about 24 miles north of downtown Chicago, in Lake County, and it hosts one of the country's oldest and most famous outdoor music venues (Ravinia Festival) as well as some of the most notable architectural residential in the Midwest.
If you're moving to or from Highland Park, here's what a real move actually looks like from a crew's perspective, including one specific timing consideration that separates Highland Park from most other suburban moves.
Where Highland Park sits
Highland Park is on the North Shore lakefront in Lake County. It borders Deerfield to the west, Highwood to the north, and Glencoe to the south. The Metra Union Pacific North line runs along the lakefront through the village, with three stations (Ravinia, Highland Park, and Braeside) serving different neighborhoods.
The drive from our Elston Avenue base to central Highland Park is roughly 45-55 minutes in normal conditions.
The Highland Park housing character
Highland Park has one of the most varied housing profiles among North Shore villages:
Lakefront estate homes. Along Sheridan Road and lakefront streets, some of the region's most substantial single-family homes. Many are architecturally significant, some designed by notable architects.
Historic downtown Highland Park. Around Central Avenue and the Highland Park Metra station, older character homes with substantial architecture, some condos and townhomes, and a walkable downtown with real dining and shopping.
Established residential neighborhoods. Throughout the village, single-family homes ranging from mid-century modern designs to Tudor Revival to Colonial. Substantial without necessarily being estate-scale.
Newer construction. Some newer luxury single-family homes, particularly on lots where older homes were removed and rebuilt.
Some condos and townhomes in specific developments, particularly in and near downtown.
Ravinia neighborhood. Around the Ravinia Festival area, distinctive established neighborhoods with a specific character shaped by the festival's presence.
The Ravinia Festival factor
Here's the timing consideration that separates Highland Park moves from most other suburban moves: Ravinia Festival season, from June through September.
Ravinia is one of the country's largest outdoor music festivals, and its Highland Park venue draws tens of thousands of visitors on concert nights throughout the summer. This creates specific move-day considerations:
Ravinia concert night traffic on approach routes (Green Bay Road, Ravinia neighborhood streets, some Sheridan Road stretches) can be substantial in the late afternoon and evening.
Ravinia neighborhood addresses are especially affected on concert nights; if you're moving in or out of the Ravinia neighborhood during festival season, verify the concert schedule.
Weekend concert dates are the busiest. Weekday concerts affect traffic less but still create patterns worth accounting for.
Post-concert dispersal in the evenings runs for an hour or two after the concert ends.
Off-season (October through May) Ravinia is not a factor. Moves during this window don't need Ravinia planning.
If your move date falls during festival season, check the Ravinia schedule and consider timing around it, especially for Ravinia-neighborhood addresses.
The private drive factor
For estate-scale Highland Park homes, the driveway is often a real consideration:
Long private drives. Some Highland Park driveways are substantial, particularly for lakefront and older estate properties.
Landscaped entries. Mature trees, formal gardens, and hardscape features common on estate properties. Positioning the truck to protect these matters.
Gated entries. Some homes have gates at the road. Coordinate gate codes ahead of moving day.
Winter conditions. A driveway that's fine in July may be different in January. For winter moves, verify.
The higher-end furnishings reality
Highland Park moves often involve possessions that need specific handling:
Fine art. Our artwork moving service handles framed originals, sculpture, and mirrors. For museum-caliber pieces, we recommend a specialized art shipper. See our artwork movers guide.
Antique furniture. Common in Highland Park homes. Our antique furniture service handles pieces of real value.
Piano. Grand pianos are common. Our piano moving service handles these.
Wine collections. Serious collections often need specialty transport. See our higher-value collections guide.
Formal china, crystal, and service pieces. Full packing service handles these with dish packs and individual wrap.
The white glove default
For most Highland Park moves, particularly for estate homes, our white glove service is often the appropriate baseline. See our is white glove worth it guide for the honest math.
For smaller Highland Park moves (a downtown condo, a smaller home), standard local moving is often the right fit.
The school factor
Highland Park schools drive substantial family-move demand.
North Shore School District 112 for K-8 in Highland Park. Township High School District 113, with Highland Park High School as the primary high school (Deerfield High School also serves parts of the district). Both consistently rank among Illinois' top public schools.
Timing
Peak season: May through September, with the Ravinia factor overlapping much of this window.
Family moves cluster in July and August.
Book earlier than most suburbs. Highland Park moves involve more coordination than standard suburban moves; 6-8 weeks lead time is appropriate.
Off-season (October-May) offers easier scheduling and no Ravinia considerations.

The neighboring suburbs
Highland Park sits within a corridor of North Shore villages:
Deerfield to the west is more corporate-oriented and has slightly less lakefront character. See our Deerfield movers guide.
Glencoe to the south is smaller and more estate-oriented.
Highwood to the north is smaller and has a specific commercial character.
Lake Forest farther north is more estate-scale.
Moves between any of these are essentially local for us.
