3. Unpacking at the new home. True white glove includes emptying boxes at the destination, placing items in cabinets and closets, and removing packing materials. That's a service standard moving doesn't include.

Add those three together and you're looking at roughly 40-70% more than the same move done standard, in exchange for a fundamentally different day-of experience.

When it's genuinely worth it

Six situations where white glove is honestly the right answer:

1. You have multiple higher-value pieces. Not one or two nicer things, we handle those with extra care as part of standard service. But if your home is full of antiques, real art, refinished vintage furniture, or a china cabinet of grandmother's crystal, the risk math flips. One damaged antique from a rushed move costs more than the entire white glove upgrade. The insurance industry has known this forever: careful handling is cheaper than claims.

2. Your home has higher-end finishes throughout. Refinished hardwood floors, marble countertops, plaster walls, custom millwork, all the things that cost thousands to repair if scuffed or gouged. White glove crews use extra floor protection, slow the pace at every doorway, and move as if the home matters as much as the belongings. Which, in these homes, it does.

3. You're downsizing from a long-held family home. This one is subtle but real. A family that's been in one home for 20+ years is moving decades of accumulated care, and the emotional weight of the move is real. Handing that to a crew that treats it as one more move on a Wednesday is jarring. White glove crews slow down for exactly this, and the difference is noticeable.

4. You physically can't do the pre-move work yourself. Pregnancy, injury, illness, seniors moving, single-parent households with no help. In these situations, "full packing service" isn't a luxury, it's the mechanism that makes the move possible at all. White glove is often the correct answer for functional reasons, not aesthetic ones.

5. You value the least-stressful move over the cheapest move. Some customers, and this is a legitimate value, want the moving experience itself to be minimal. Point, don't lift. Direct, don't work. If your available time is limited or your bandwidth is spoken for, buying back the hours is the point.

6. You're moving into a home that isn't fully ready yet. This is the underrated one. If you're moving into a home where you don't have time to unpack for two weeks because work is packed or life is complicated, having the crew unpack for you means the home is functional the day you walk in. Beds made, kitchen set up, closets stocked. That's a different life for the first two weeks than staring at 80 unopened boxes.

When it's not worth it (be honest about this)

Just as importantly, here's when standard moving is the better call:

1. You have time on the front end. If you have three weekends before the move and you're willing to pack yourself, you save meaningful money by doing so. The crew still handles wrapping the furniture, disassembly, protection, carrying, loading, driving, unloading, and reassembly. That's the actual heavy lifting. Packing boxes ahead of time is what you can do yourself, and doing it saves the largest single line item on a white glove quote.

2. Your home is a normal mix of household stuff. Everyday furniture, some framed prints, a decent TV, kitchen items, everything most Chicagoland homes have. A standard crew handles this beautifully. The "white glove" premium doesn't buy you meaningful additional protection for items that are already well-protected under standard service.

3. You'd rather unpack at your own pace. Some customers enjoy the process of settling into a new home slowly, opening one box at a time over a few weeks. If that's you, paying for someone else to unpack you is buying a service you don't want.

4. You're on a budget and the moving cost matters. This is the most honest reason of all. Neither answer is wrong. The mistake is picking one because it sounds prestigious or because someone talked you into it.
