Deerfield Movers: Moving To and From Deerfield, Illinois
Deerfield is one of Chicagoland's more distinctive suburbs, and one with an unusual dual identity: a strong residential village with excellent schools and North Shore-adjacent character, and a genuine corporate employment corridor along Lake-Cook Road that hosts several major corporate headquarters. This makes Deerfield unlike most suburbs: rather than being purely a bedroom community, it's a place where many residents work in the immediate area as well as live in it.
If you're moving to or from Deerfield, here's what a real move actually looks like from a crew's perspective.
Where Deerfield sits
Deerfield is about 27 miles north of downtown Chicago, in Lake County. It borders Highland Park to the east, Riverwoods to the south, Bannockburn to the north, and Northbrook to the west (through a stretch that includes the Lake-Cook Road corporate corridor). The Metra Milwaukee District North line runs through the village, with the Deerfield station serving commuters.
The drive from our Elston Avenue base to central Deerfield is roughly 45-55 minutes in normal conditions, longer at rush hour.
The corporate corridor factor
The single most distinctive thing about Deerfield's identity: the corporate corridor along Lake-Cook Road.
Several major corporate headquarters are located in or immediately adjacent to Deerfield along this stretch. This creates a distinctive resident base and moving pattern:
Work-adjacent living. Many Deerfield residents work at these nearby companies, meaning the "commute" is a short drive rather than a Metra ride to Chicago. Move-day considerations reflect this: fewer residents needing a Loop-commute-optimized address, more valuing proximity to Lake-Cook Road corporate campuses.
Corporate transfers. Deerfield sees a steady stream of corporate transfer moves, executives and professionals moving into or out of the area for job changes. These often involve broader logistical support (temporary housing, real estate assistance, coordinated closings).
Long-distance moves in and out. More common than in some suburbs, given the corporate mobility of residents. Our long-distance moving service handles these directly.
The Deerfield housing character
Deerfield has one of the more consistent housing profiles among Lake County suburbs:
Established single-family neighborhoods. The dominant housing type. Vintage colonials, Tudors, ranches, and mid-century modern designs on well-maintained streets. Substantial without being estate-scale.
Larger homes in specific areas, particularly on the eastern and southern edges of the village. Some genuine estate homes in these corners.
Downtown Deerfield. Around the Metra station and along Waukegan Road, some older homes with more character, some townhomes and condos, and the walkable downtown itself.
Newer construction in specific developments and on redeveloped lots.
Some condos and townhomes in specific developments.
Downtown Deerfield
The downtown along Waukegan Road has real character: restaurants, small businesses, the library, community spaces. It's smaller than Arlington Heights' or Northbrook's, but functional.
For moves near downtown:
Parking near the Metra station competes with commuter traffic during rush hours Downtown commercial activity during business hours and evenings Access via Waukegan Road (a major arterial) is direct
Truck access
For most Deerfield homes, truck access is straightforward:
Wide residential streets in most neighborhoods Driveways that accommodate moving trucks in most single-family homes
Considerations:
Larger estate homes with landscaped drives requiring careful positioning Some HOA rules in specific developments Condo and townhome buildings with COI and freight elevator requirements Corporate corridor traffic on Lake-Cook Road during weekday rush hours
The school factor
Deerfield schools drive substantial family-move demand.
Deerfield Public Schools District 109 for K-8 (one of the strongest districts in Illinois). Township High School District 113, with Deerfield High School as the primary high school. Both consistently rank among the state's top public schools.
Family moves cluster in July and August. Book earlier during these windows.
The Metra commute
For Deerfield residents commuting to Chicago via Metra Milwaukee District North:
Rush-hour service is frequent and reliable Off-peak service more limited Commuter parking at the Deerfield station requires permits The ride to Union Station takes about 50-60 minutes with the schedule
For residents commuting locally to the Lake-Cook Road corporate corridor, the drive is short and Metra isn't relevant.
Timing
Peak season: May through September.
Family moves cluster in July and August.
Corporate transfer moves can happen year-round; less concentration around traditional peak seasons.
End-of-month moves book fastest.
Weekday moves often smoother.
Winter moves work well: less peak pressure.

The white glove question

For smaller Deerfield moves or condos, standard local moving is often the right fit.
Chicago-to-Deerfield moves
Common patterns:
Chicago family to Deerfield single-family. Common upsizing pattern.
Corporate transfer into Deerfield. Often from out of state or from other Chicagoland locations. Coordinated with corporate mobility services.
Retirement moves out of Deerfield. Empty-nester downsizing to smaller Deerfield condos, or moves to other locations.
For the timeline, our Chicago to Northbrook post covers many similar considerations.
The neighboring suburbs
Deerfield sits within a corridor of established North Shore-adjacent suburbs:
Northbrook to the west shares similar family-community character. See our Northbrook movers guide.
Highland Park to the east has more lakefront character.
Riverwoods to the south is more estate-scale.
Bannockburn to the north is small and estate-oriented.
Moves between any of these are essentially local for us.
