Why Choose a Family-Run Mover. Our Story Since 1982

Why Choose a Family-Run Mover. Our Story Since 1982

Why Choose a Family-Run Mover: Our Story Since 1982

Every roll of tape and every heavy lift represents a chapter in someone's life. When you're choosing a moving company, you're really choosing the people who'll be inside your home for a day, carrying the things you've collected over years. Knowing who those people are, and what they stand for, matters.

Here's the story of Windy City Movers, honestly told.

1982: Ed and Dawn Witas start a company

In 1982, long before national moving chains and app-based booking, Chicago native Ed Witas and his wife Dawn started a small moving company on the city's Northwest Side. They had one truck, a phone, and a straightforward idea: treat every family's belongings the way you'd want yours treated, quote honestly, and show up when you said you would.

That's not a revolutionary business model. It's just an unusually consistent one, and it's what built the company Windy City Movers became. Over the following decades, Ed and Dawn grew the business one satisfied customer at a time, one referral at a time. Repeat customers became multi-generational customers, families we moved as young couples came back to us for their kids' first apartments and their parents' downsizings. That's the version of loyalty a company only earns by being genuinely worth calling back, again and again, for forty years.

Ed and Dawn's core principles, honesty, transparency, and treating every home like your own, became the foundation that everything else was built on. They're still the foundation today.

2023: A new chapter

In 2023, after over four decades of leading the company, Ed transferred ownership to Dash Munkh. Dash had spent years learning the moving business from the inside, understanding what made Windy City Movers different from every other truck-and-crew operation in Chicago. Taking over meant something specific to him: keeping every principle that mattered, and modernizing the parts of the business that could serve customers better.

The handover was deliberate. Nothing important changed. The crews stayed the same. The commitment to honest quotes stayed the same. The no-deposit policy, one of Ed's original touches, stayed. The idea that every home gets the same care as your own family's stayed. What changed was scale, tooling, and reach.

What's changed under Dash

Modernizing a forty-year-old company means being honest about what needed updating and what didn't. Here's what actually changed:

Better online systems. Booking, quotes, and communication moved online for customers who prefer it. The phone still works exactly like it always did, and plenty of customers still call, but for the growing number who want to start with an online form or a video walkthrough, the front door is now open there too.

Expanded service area. As the operation grew, we grew with it, from primarily serving the near Northwest Side to now handling moves across all of Chicagoland and into the western and North Shore suburbs, plus long-distance runs across the country. The crews still work out of the same Jefferson Park base; we just travel farther.

A modern fleet. More trucks, well-maintained, so schedules stay reliable and customers can book the date they actually want.

GPS routing. Simple, boring, and useful: the fastest routes on the day, so crews arrive when they said they would and moves don't leak into evening because of traffic. Not revolutionary; just done well.

Materials reused where we can. The moving blankets we bring on your move today are the same blankets that came off the last truck we unloaded yesterday. Wardrobe boxes and TV boxes go back into rotation after every move. Nothing gets thrown out that could be used again, which is both the right thing to do and how a well-run moving operation has always worked.

Refreshed branding. New logo, updated website, and a visual identity that matches the company we've become without pretending to be someone we're not. The name and the phone number are the same ones customers have been calling for forty years.

What hasn't changed

The list of things Dash left alone is longer than the list of things he changed, and that's deliberate:

  • Direct carrier, not a broker. From your first call to the last piece of furniture in your new home, you work with our own crews using our own equipment. Your move never gets handed off to a stranger.
  • No deposit to book. The date is yours because we agreed on it, not because we took a chunk of your money to hold it. You pay when the work is done.
  • Transparent pricing. No seasonal surge in summer, no weekend or month-end premium, no hidden materials fees. The estimate is the honest read of your move, and the bill follows the actual hours.
  • Local, Chicago-based. We live in the city we work in. Our crews know your block, your building type, and your parking rules before the truck stops.
  • Fully licensed and insured. ILL.C.C 153317, US DOT 4338139, MC 1694629, updated, on file, and available to any customer or building that needs to see them.
  • Seven days a week. Including Sundays, and every holiday except Christmas and New Year's. Life doesn't schedule its moves around business hours; neither do we.

Why family-run still matters

A national chain moves a household the same way it moves ten thousand others. A family-run company remembers that this one specific move, yours, is the only one that matters this weekend. The person answering the phone knows the crew leads by name. The crew leads know the neighborhoods. Nothing gets routed through a corporate scheduling engine that treats you as a case number.

That's not romantic; it's operational. It's what lets us give you a real, in-person walkthrough for the estimate instead of a blind phone quote. It's what makes the office who booked your move also the office that answers when you have a question the day before. It's how the same crew ends up doing your move, your neighbor's move, and your kid's move when they get their first apartment.

From one truck to today

Ed and Dawn started with a single truck in 1982 and built a company one careful move at a time. Dash inherited that company in 2023 and has spent the years since making it faster, more accurate, and more accessible without changing the parts that mattered. Same values. Same crews. Same commitment to treating your home like our own.

We've been moving Chicagoland families since 1982, and we'd be honored to be part of your next chapter.
