Do You Move Appliances Within the Same Building?
Do You Move Appliances Within the Same Building?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. We move appliances within the same building or to another location, wherever you need them.
Not every appliance move crosses town. Sometimes the fridge is just going down the hall. A landlord is swapping washers between units. A condo owner is moving from the third floor to the sixth in the same building. A homeowner is moving the old fridge from the kitchen to the garage. It's a short trip. The appliance doesn't care. It's still heavy and awkward, and it still needs careful handling.
Common in-building moves
Unit to unit. Moving from one apartment or condo to another in the same building, appliances included.
Floor to floor. Taking a washer or dryer up or down a level.
Room to room. Moving a fridge from the kitchen to the basement, or a freezer to the garage.
Landlord swaps. Moving appliances between units during turnovers or repairs.
Elevators and stairs
In a high-rise or an elevator building, the elevator does most of the work, which is why the move itself is often quick even when the appliance is going from a unit near the lobby all the way up to one near the top floor. Many Chicago buildings require you to reserve the elevator for a move, so check with your building management before you book. If your building gives you a short window, ask for a wider one. It gives the crew room to work without rushing.
In walk-ups and houses, the stairs are the challenge. We use stair dollies, and basement and second-floor placements are everyday work. Read can you move an appliance to the basement.
Building paperwork
Some buildings want a certificate of insurance even for a move inside the building. We send COIs for free, usually the same day your building sends its requirements. Read when will I receive the COI.
Getting it ready
The appliance needs to be disconnected before we move it, even if it's only going down the hall. We don't do plumbing work, so a licensed plumber disconnects and reconnects gas and water lines. Read do you disconnect gas and water lines on appliances.
Refrigerators just need to be emptied and drained.
Protecting the building
Shared buildings get the same care your home does. Floors, door frames, and stairs are covered on every move at no charge. That matters even more in a building where your neighbors and your management company will notice every scuff in the hallway long after the crew has gone home. Nobody wants that call.
Moving more than appliances?
If you're moving units within the building, the furniture and boxes can come along on the same job. Read do you move apartments, condos, and houses. For buildings with set move days, see what if my building only allows moves on certain days.
Pricing
In-building appliance moves are hourly, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel, even when the move happens inside one building.
In-building moves are part of our large appliance moving service, one of our moving services.
