Do You Move Apartments, Condos, and Houses?
Do You Move Apartments, Condos, and Houses?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. Our moving services cover every type of home there is, and in a city like Chicago that covers a lot of ground. Studios and lofts. Two-flats and bungalows. Condos in towers along the lake and houses in the suburbs with a finished basement nobody has opened since 2015.
Here's the thing most people don't expect, though. The type of property matters less than you'd think. After moving Chicago since 1982, we can tell you that four things actually change the day. None of them is the bedroom count.
The elevator
A building with an elevator sounds easy. Often it is. But elevators in apartment and condo buildings usually come with rules, and the rules run the schedule.
Most buildings want a certificate of insurance before the crew arrives. We send COIs for free, usually the same day your building sends its requirements. You can read more in our post on when you'll receive the COI.
Then there's the move window. Some buildings only allow moves on certain days or during set hours, and the freight elevator has to be reserved ahead of time. Our advice is simple. Reserve a wider window than you think you need, with some breathing room at the end. A tight window turns a normal move into a race.
The parking
In a house with a driveway, the truck backs up and the crew gets to work. In the city, parking can decide how the whole morning goes.
Many Chicago blocks need a CDOT permit with posted no-parking signs to hold space for the truck. We'll tell you before moving day if yours does. Downtown buildings may have a loading dock instead, with its own schedule.
The long walk
Not every door is close to the curb. Courtyard buildings, rear entrances, a loading dock on the far side of a tower. Each extra stretch between the truck and your front door gets walked dozens of times over the course of a move. It isn't a fee. It's simply time on the clock, and it's something we factor into your estimate.
The stairs
Walk-ups are everyday work for us. On those jobs we usually send three or more movers, and they carry with lift straps and shoulder dollies rather than wrestling pieces down step by step. Stairs and normal carries are part of the hourly work. If you're on a third floor, our post on moving out of a third-floor walk-up covers how that day runs.
Where houses are different
Houses usually skip the elevator and the permit. What they add is volume and sequence. Basements, garages, and three bedrooms of furniture mean heavy-item planning and a clear order for which rooms come out first. Beds, dining tables, and other big pieces come apart to clear doorways and go back together at the new place, and that's always included in the hourly rate. Our house moving service covers the details.
What stays the same everywhere
Whatever the building, a few things don't change. Moving blankets are free during every move. Floors, door frames, and stairs get protected. Pricing is hourly and based on your situation, and it stays the same all year.
