Do You Disconnect a Hot Tub's Electrical and Water Lines?
Do You Disconnect a Hot Tub's Electrical and Water Lines?
Last updated: October 2026
No. The hot tub needs to be drained and electrically disconnected before we arrive, and we don't do plumbing work. Once it's ready, we handle the move.
We know that adds a step to your list. But disconnecting power, water, and gas is licensed work, and it belongs with the people licensed to do it.
Who handles what
Your electrician. Hardwired hot tubs need an electrician to disconnect the power safely.
Your plumber. If the tub is tied into a water line, a plumber disconnects it.
Your gas fitter. If the tub has a gas heater, a licensed gas fitter disconnects the line and caps it.
Us. Once the tub is drained and disconnected, we move it.
That's the same rule that applies to any appliance with a gas line, a water line, or hardwired power. The licensed pro disconnects it. The moving crew moves it.
When to schedule it
Plan the disconnection for a day or so before the move, so nothing holds up the crew when they arrive. Drain the tub completely 24 to 48 hours ahead and let the inside dry out. Read do you drain the hot tub for the checklist.
If the electrician and the drain are both done the day before, moving day goes smoothly. If they're not done when the crew arrives, the move has to wait. Nobody wants that.
At the new place
The same goes in reverse. We place the tub where you want it. Your electrician and plumber reconnect it. Get them booked before moving day, so the tub isn't sitting empty in the backyard for weeks while you wait for an appointment.
How we move it
Once it's ready, the path decides the method. If nothing is blocking the way, we move it on dollies. If it can't fit through the backyard gate or door, we use a crane. Our hoisting and crane service covers the lift. Send us the spa dimensions and the narrowest point on the path, and we'll tell you which yours needs.

The same rule for other appliances
Hot tubs aren't the only thing with hookups. Anything with a gas line, a water line, or hardwired power gets disconnected by the right licensed pro before the crew picks it up, and that includes the appliances in your kitchen and laundry room. Refrigerators just need to be drained. Our large appliance moving service covers moving appliances within your building or to a new home.
Swim spas too
Swim spas follow the same steps. They must be drained and disconnected before we arrive. Read do you move swim spas.
Pricing
Hot tub moves are hourly, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. Your electrician, plumber, or gas fitter bills separately.
Disconnection is covered on our jacuzzi moving service page, part of our moving services.
Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com once your tub is ready to go.
