Can You Move a Piano Within My House?
Can You Move a Piano Within My House?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. Room-to-room and floor-to-floor repositioning is a regular request.
A piano doesn't have to be leaving the house to need movers. Maybe the living room is getting redone. Maybe the kids have outgrown lessons and the piano is heading to the basement. Or maybe the piano finally gets the spot it deserves, in the front room where the light is good. Whatever the reason, a piano is still a piano. Moving it twenty feet across the house takes exactly the same care and the same equipment as moving it twenty miles across the city.
Why it's not a DIY job
An upright can weigh several hundred pounds, and most of that weight sits high and toward the back. That makes it top-heavy and easy to tip. A grand stands on three legs that were never made to carry it across a room. Pushing either one across a hardwood floor can damage the floor, the legs, or the piano itself.
Room to room
On the same floor, the job is mostly about the path, and in a lot of Chicago homes the path from the front room to the back room runs through a narrow hallway or a doorway that was framed long before anyone thought about getting a piano through it. Doorways, tight corners, and rugs all matter. Uprights travel padded and strapped on a piano board. Grands come apart first. The legs and pedals come off, along with the music stand and lid. Then the piano rides on its side on a skid board. Read can you move a grand piano.
Floors, door frames, and stairs get protected along the way.
Floor to floor
Stairs are where piano moves get serious. Every time. Going up or down a flight, the crew controls the piano one step at a time. Basement stairs in Chicago homes are often narrow, steep, or both, so tell us about yours when you call.
If the stairs won't work at all, the window or balcony might. Read what if my piano won't fit up the staircase.
What to tell us
The piano. Upright, baby grand, or grand. The brand helps too.
Where it is now. The room, the floor, and the path out of the room.
Where it's going. The same details at the other end.
The stairs. How many steps, how wide, and whether they turn.
Before we arrive
Clear the path. Furniture, rugs, and anything on the stairs out of the way.
Pick the exact spot. Decide where the piano goes before the crew arrives, so it only moves once.
Mind the walls. Ideally the new spot isn't right next to a heat vent or a sunny window.
After the move
Even a short move can affect tuning. Plan to have your tuner come out once the piano settles into its new spot.
Other heavy things inside the house
Pianos aren't the only thing people move within their homes. We do the same for safes and appliances. Read do you move safes within the same house.
