Can You Move Outdoor Furniture, Grills, and Lawn Equipment?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. The backyard comes with you.
People plan the living room down to the last box. Then on moving morning they remember the patio set, the grill, and the lawn mower still sitting outside. That's fine. We move all of it. A few of those things just need some prep before the truck shows up, and it's easier to know now.
Patio furniture and planters
Outdoor sets, planters, and garden pieces get wrapped and moved with the same care as the furniture inside your house. Moving blankets are free during the move, so nothing costs extra just because it lived outdoors.
Bigger patio sets come apart when they need to, the same way a bed or dining table would, and go back together at the new place. Taking furniture apart and putting it back together is always included in the hourly rate.
One tip. Bring cushions inside and let them dry if it's rained. Wet cushions are no fun to pack.
Grills and propane tanks
Grills travel emptied of fuel. Empty the grill before moving day, and clean out the ash or grease if you can.
Propane tanks move too. Tell us about them when you book so the crew knows they're coming.
Lawn mowers, snowblowers, and other fuel-powered equipment
This one matters. Lawn mowers and snowblowers must be drained before the move. Gas and oil both need to come out.
Plan for it a few days ahead. The easiest way is to run the mower until the tank is empty on its last mow at the old house. Check your owner's manual for how to drain the oil on your model.
Garden tools
Rakes, shovels, and other garden tools get packed separately so they don't ride against your indoor furniture. A muddy shovel and a fabric sofa should never share a corner of the truck.
Garages, sheds, and workshops
Here's where backyard moves get bigger than people expect. A garage, a shed, or a workshop can hold as much as a spare bedroom. Tell us about them when you call for an estimate, so the plan covers the whole property and not just the house.
Moving out of a property with barns or outbuildings? Our Barrington movers page talks about exactly that. And our Kildeer movers page covers high-end patio furniture.
The bigger backyard items
Some outdoor pieces have their own service. A hot tub needs a different plan than a patio chair, and our jacuzzi moving service handles it. Our post on how to move a hot tub or jacuzzi explains how it works.
A quick backyard checklist
Do these before moving day.
- Empty the grill of fuel
- Drain gas and oil from the mower and snowblower
- Bring cushions in and dry them
- Gather garden tools in one spot
- Tell us about the propane tanks, the shed, and the garage
That's it. The rest is ours.
Moving a house with a backyard is everyday work for our house moving service, one of our core moving services. Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com, and don't forget to mention what's outside.
