"Nothing moved." That's what Melba Harris told us after we loaded her Penske truck in Long Grove and she drove it to her new home. For a self-driven move, that is the entire ballgame. You can pack a rental truck full and still open the door at the other end to a landslide, because a truck you're driving yourself sends every bump, turn, and hard stop straight into the load. Getting it to arrive exactly as it left takes more than stacking boxes until the door closes.

Here's something people don't always realize: we don't have to drive your things to be useful. Plenty of folks rent their own truck, a Penske, a U-Haul, whatever's in the driveway, and just want the muscle and the know-how to load it right. That was Melba. Loading a rental truck for a safe self-drive is its own particular skill, and it's exactly what our load & unload service is built for.

Build a solid wall of cargo

The goal is a load with no air in it. A truck packed tight behaves like one solid block; a truck with gaps is a bunch of loose items waiting to slide into each other. So we start heavy and low. Appliances, dressers, and solid wood pieces go in first, right up against the cab, which keeps the weight forward and the truck from turning top-heavy. Then we build upward in tiers, floor to ceiling, so each layer pins the one beneath it in place.

From there it's almost a puzzle. We fit smaller boxes into the natural gaps that big furniture leaves behind, so pieces brace each other instead of floating loose. A load that interlocks holds itself together, no matter how the road underneath it behaves.

Then lock it down

Wrapping comes first, of course. Every piece went into moving blankets and shrink wrap before it entered the truck, which cushions the surfaces and keeps drawers and doors shut on the road. Rental trucks have tie-down rails along the inside walls, and we use them, strapping the tiers snug against the sides at intervals so a sharp turn can't start anything swinging.

The last trick is the one most people miss: the gap between the top of the load and the ceiling of the truck. We fill it with soft things, bags of linens, cushions, pillows, so the top layer can't bounce. Bouncing is what breaks things in a self-move, and a few pillows in the right spot quietly prevent it.

That's the whole difference between "packed" and "packed to travel." When Melba said nothing moved, this is why.
