Northbrook Movers: The North Suburbs Move, Honestly Explained
Northbrook is one of Chicagoland's most established North Shore suburbs. About 22 miles north of downtown Chicago, in Cook County, it's known for substantial single-family homes, one of the region's better school districts, and a mix of commercial areas (Northbrook Court, the Willow Road corridor) that give the village real amenities.
If you're moving to or from Northbrook, here's what a real move actually looks like from a crew's perspective.
Where Northbrook sits
Northbrook is on the North Shore, between Glenview to the south and Deerfield to the north, with Highland Park a bit farther northeast. The village covers a genuine area, roughly 13 square miles, and the housing character varies depending on where you are.
The drive from our Elston Avenue base to central Northbrook is roughly 45-55 minutes in normal conditions. Rush hour on the Edens can add significant time. Metra's Milwaukee District North line runs through the village, with the Northbrook station handling a real commuter volume.
The housing mix
Northbrook has several distinct housing patterns:
Established single-family neighborhoods. Streets in the village's older sections have brick colonials, split-levels, and ranches from the 1950s through 1970s. Many have been updated significantly over the years, but the layouts remain.
Newer construction. Throughout the village and especially in specific developments, newer single-family homes, some quite large. Teardown-and-rebuild has been common on established streets.
Larger estate homes. Northbrook has real estate homes in specific corridors, some on wooded lots, some with detached garages or additional structures.
Some condos and townhomes. Certain developments, and some near Northbrook Court, have condo and townhome options.
Mid-rise apartments. Along commercial corridors, some newer mid-rise apartment buildings.
Each of these moves differently. A vintage split-level with a finished basement requires different planning than a newer construction with an attached three-car garage; a mid-rise unit involves elevator windows and COI requirements the single-family homes don't.
The school factor
Northbrook's schools are one of the primary reasons families move here.
Northbrook School District 27 and Northbrook/Glenview School District 30 serve K-8 for most of the village. Glenbrook North High School (District 225) serves the high school students, and it consistently ranks among the state's top public high schools.
The school calendar drives moving demand. July and August are the peak months for family moves; families want kids settled and comfortable before the first day. Book early during these windows, 6-8 weeks ahead is smart for August specifically.
School registration. Northbrook districts have specific paperwork requirements. Get the process started as soon as your closing date is confirmed; some documentation (proof of residency) can't happen until you have the new address, but everything else can be assembled early.
Truck access
For most Northbrook homes, truck access is straightforward:

If your move is near Northbrook Court or along Willow Road, note:
Commercial traffic on these corridors can add drive time during peak hours Holiday shopping seasons especially heavy around Northbrook Court Access from major arterials is usually direct; the crew navigates around commercial traffic
For most residential moves, the commercial corridors don't significantly affect the day.
The Metra commute
Many Northbrook residents commute to Chicago via Metra Milwaukee District North. The Northbrook station serves the village directly and connects to Union Station.
For families choosing Northbrook partly for the commute:
- Commuter parking permits at the Metra station require applications; not immediate
- Rush-hour service is frequent; off-peak more limited
- Weekend service exists but is limited
Timing
Peak season: May through September, with a family-move concentration in July and August.
Slower periods: October through April, though holiday-adjacent weekends still book.
Book earlier than for a Chicago move. Suburban moves fill faster during peak. For Northbrook specifically, 6-8 weeks ahead for July-August moves and 4-6 weeks for shoulder-season moves is a reasonable planning window.
Weekday moves are often smoother in Northbrook: less traffic on the Edens, easier truck access on residential streets, and fewer competing scheduling constraints at both ends.
