White Glove vs. Standard Moving. How to Know Which Service You Need

White Glove vs. Standard Moving: How to Know Which Service You Need
Choosing between our standard local moving service and our white glove service is one of the more common questions at the estimate. Both get your household from one home to another with the same crews, the same care, and the same protection habits. The honest difference isn't quality; it's about how much of the work you're doing versus how much of the work we're doing, and how much time we take to do it.
Here's a straight comparison so you can pick the right one for your move.
The core difference in one sentence

Standard moving is you and our crew splitting the work: you pack the boxes, we handle everything else, and we work at an efficient pace to keep your hourly bill reasonable.
White glove moving is our crew doing all of it, at a slower and more careful pace, in a home where every piece deserves extra attention.
Both are professional. Both use the same crews. What's different is scope, pace, and cost.
1. Packing: yours or ours

Standard moving: You pack the boxes ahead of moving day. All the small items, the books, dishes, clothes, personal effects, are in sealed, labeled boxes by the time we arrive. We handle everything from there: wrapping the furniture, disassembling what needs to come apart, protecting the home, carrying, loading, driving, unloading, reassembling, and placing.
White glove moving: The whole packing job is ours. Our crew arrives with proper materials, packs your entire home room by room (usually taking a day, sometimes two for larger homes), and labels every box by the destination room at the new home. You don't touch a box.
Worth noting: if you like the idea of the crew doing the packing but don't need the full white glove treatment, our full packing service is available on any local move. Partial packing (just the kitchen, just the closets) is normal too. Full packing on a standard move is a middle path that fits a lot of households.
2. The pace of the move

This is the difference most customers don't anticipate but notice most on the day.
Standard moving: The crew works efficiently through the day, careful and quick. Efficiency is what keeps hourly bills honest, no wasted motion, no idle time. That doesn't mean rushed; a good standard move looks smooth and calm, but it's paced to finish in a reasonable number of hours.
White glove moving: The crew deliberately trades efficiency for pace. Every turn takes an extra beat. Every wrap gets an extra layer. Every tight-corner staircase gets an extra hand. Placement at the new home is done slowly, with you, until every piece is exactly where you want it, moved and re-moved if needed.
The white glove pace is what protects a home full of higher-value pieces. It's also what makes it cost more, hours are the largest driver of any move's bill.
3. Materials and protection

Both services use the same base materials: moving blankets, shrink wrap, packing paper, floor runners, doorway padding, wardrobe boxes, dishpacks, mirror cartons. What differs is quantity.
Standard moving: The crew brings what's needed for a well-protected move: runners on the high-traffic paths, padding at the tight-turn doorways, blanket-wrap on the furniture, and extra care where the day calls for it.
White glove moving: Everything, more generously. Full-coverage runners on every path the crew walks. Padding at every corner and railing. Extra layers of wrap on every piece. Mirror cartons even for pieces that would technically fit in a padded blanket.
This is the difference between "enough" and "abundant." Both protect your things; white glove uses "abundant" as the default setting.
4. Placement, unpacking, and cleanup

Standard moving: Furniture placed in the correct rooms at the new home. Beds and disassembled pieces reassembled. Everything ready for you to take over from there. Unpacking boxes is your job.
White glove moving: Unpacking can be included on request. Boxes emptied into cabinets and closets, items placed where you want them, packing materials removed, and the home ready to live in the moment the crew leaves. This is what "wake up in your finished new home the next morning" actually looks like.
5. What about "premium" gadgetry?
Fair question, and honest answer: we don't have proprietary premium gadgetry. No climate-controlled trucks. No custom-built crates. No branded protection kits. No inventory tracking apps.
The reason our white glove service is a premium service isn't hidden technology; it's the two things that actually protect a home full of valuable pieces:
- The extra time we take, so nothing is rushed
- The extra materials we use, so nothing is under-protected
If someone's selling you a proprietary "system" for their white glove service, ask exactly what it is. Real premium moving is careful hands and patience; those are the things worth paying more for.
For the pieces that genuinely need specialty transport, museum-grade art, six-figure antiques in original crates, extremely humidity-sensitive instruments on long-distance runs, we'll tell you plainly to hire a specialized art-and-antiques shipper. That's covered in more depth in our fine art guide and white glove service guide.
The comparison, honestly

Both services deliver a well-executed move. Which one is right depends on what you want off your plate and what your home contains.
Which one fits your move
Choose standard moving if:
- You're willing to pack your own boxes ahead of moving day
- Your household is a mix of everyday items with a few valuable pieces (we handle those with extra care as part of standard service)
- You're okay unpacking boxes at your own pace after moving day
- Cost efficiency matters to you
Choose white glove moving if:
- Your home contains multiple higher-value pieces, antiques, art, higher-end finishes
- You don't have the time or energy to pack yourself
- You want the crew to unpack at the new home so it's ready to live in immediately
- You'd rather trade cost efficiency for the least stressful move possible
- You'd describe your ideal moving day as "I want to point, not lift"
Consider a middle path if:
- You're between the two profiles, which most customers are. Our full packing service on a standard local move gets you most of the "hands-off" experience at a lower cost than full white glove. Ask about it at the estimate.
