Kildeer is one of Chicagoland's smaller and quieter villages: about 4,000 residents, tucked into Lake County roughly 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. It shares its identity with neighboring Long Grove, and the two often show up together on the same customer's list of "places we're looking at." Where Kildeer sits
Kildeer is in Lake County, north of Barrington and west of the Buffalo Grove-Wheeling corridor. The village doesn't have its own downtown in the traditional sense; Long Grove's historic downtown to the northwest, and Lake Zurich's commercial areas farther north, serve as the practical hubs for the area.
The drive from our Elston Avenue base to Kildeer is roughly 45-60 minutes in normal conditions, longer during rush hour. It's outside our 15-mile radius, but Kildeer sits inside our regular service area anyway, and we work the northwest Lake County corridor weekly.
The housing character
Kildeer's housing is distinctive:
Large lots. Kildeer has minimum lot sizes that are larger than most Chicagoland suburbs, and this shapes everything. Most homes sit on 1 to 5+ acres, with real space between neighbors, mature trees, and long private drives.
Custom and semi-custom construction. Much of Kildeer's housing was built as custom homes or in small custom-oriented developments, ranging from the late 1970s through very recent construction.
Estate homes at the higher end. Kildeer has genuinely large estate homes in parts of the village, some with detached garages, guest houses, workshops, horse facilities, or extensive landscaping.
Some equestrian and rural properties. Similar to Barrington Hills to the south, parts of Kildeer support horse properties and rural-adjacent living.
The specifics vary dramatically from one home to another, which is why the walkthrough at the estimate matters more here than in many suburbs.
Private drives and access
The single biggest logistical variable in a Kildeer move: the driveway.
Many Kildeer homes have long private drives, sometimes a quarter mile or more from the road to the house. Our trucks handle these fine in dry conditions. Considerations:
Winter and wet weather. A private drive that's fine in July can be genuinely challenging in a mud season or after a snowstorm. If you're moving in November through March, verify the driveway is passable for a loaded truck.
