Your Complete Chicago Moving Timeline: What to Do 8 Weeks Out to Move-In Day

Moving your life from one home to another shouldn't feel like a second job. It just often does, because most people don't have a plan for the weeks before the move, only the day itself. Here's the eight-week countdown our crews wish every customer followed, sized so nothing lands in the wrong week and the moving day itself is boring.

Whether you're moving across the street or across the country, this is the version that works.

8 weeks out: the purge

Before you think about boxes, focus on what not to move. Every item you don't move is one you don't pay to move.

• Audit every room. Attic, basement, garage, the closets you haven't opened in a year, the drawers full of things nobody claimed.
• Use the one-year rule. If you haven't used, worn, or looked for it in the last twelve months, it doesn't need to travel.
• Sort into four piles. Keep, sell, donate, discard.
• Start a move folder. Physical or digital, whichever you'll actually use. Everything move-related goes in it: quotes, receipts, closing or lease paperwork, utility confirmations, new address labels.

6 weeks out: quote and book

Book the crew now, especially if your move falls at the end of a month or during the summer, both fill up fast.

• Get your quote. Call us for an in-home walkthrough or a video tour. The estimate is free and non-binding, and it's the honest number for your actual move, not an average. Tell us everything: both addresses, what's going, what the buildings are like, whether you'd like packing help. The more we know, the more accurate the quote.
• Order packing supplies. If you're packing yourself, a mix of small, medium, and large boxes, plus dishpacks for kitchens, wardrobe boxes for closets, packing paper, and quality tape. Our moving supplies shows what we stock and at what prices, no mystery bundles.
• Decide on packing help. Full packing, partial packing (just the kitchen, just the closets), or DIY, all normal. Tell us at the estimate which version you want; the number reflects your actual plan.

4 weeks out: pack the easy stuff, sort the paperwork

• Start with what you won't miss. Books, out-of-season clothes, decorative items, formal dining sets, the guest room, holiday decor. Label boxes by the room they're going to at the new place, not the one they're coming from, and put the room name on two sides of each box.
• Notify the address changes. USPS forwarding, bank, credit cards, insurance, employer, driver's license (Illinois gives you ten days after moving), voter registration, subscriptions.
• Start your utility list. Water, gas, electric, internet, trash. In Chicago, internet is often the longest lead time, sometimes weeks for a new install, so call your provider now rather than closer to the move.
• If your building requires a certificate of insurance, send us the requirements as soon as you have them. We handle the COI, usually the same day the building sends its requirements, and always free. Doing this early prevents move-day paperwork stress.

2 weeks out: precision

• Pack the "open first" box. A suitcase or clear bin with the things you'll need on the first night and next morning: toiletries, medications, a few days of clothes, chargers, phone-charging cables, a set of towels, a shower curtain, basic tools, snacks, coffee. This lives in your car, not on the truck.
• Confirm utilities. Old services scheduled to shut off the day after your move. New services live before the move (a day or two ahead if possible so you walk into a warm/lit home).
• Eat through the freezer and pantry. Frozen and canned goods are heavy, and frozen food doesn't travel well. Cook your way down.
• Confirm the move. Call or email us to confirm arrival window, crew size, and any last-minute updates. If parking permits are needed for the truck, we'll have told you already; make sure they're posted.
• Start telling your inner circle the new address in the way each will actually need it (family group chat, school, doctors, closest friends).

Moving week: the countdown

For a local move, "moving day" and "move-in day" are usually the same day, out of the old place in the morning, into the new place in the afternoon. For a long-distance move, they can be separated by a day or several. Your estimate will spell out which shape yours takes.

One labeling tip that changes everything

The single most useful labeling habit isn't just "room + contents." It's room + priority. Something like:

• "Kitchen, high priority: coffee maker, essential dishes, kettle"
• "Kitchen, medium: everyday cookware"
• "Kitchen, low: fancy platters, seasonal items"

When the truck unloads at the new house, boxes marked "high priority" come off first and go where you need them right away. Everything else can wait its turn. This one habit is the difference between having a functional kitchen on night one versus digging through fifteen anonymous boxes at 10 p.m. looking for the toaster.

Same rule works for every room: bathroom high priority (toiletries, one set of towels), bedroom high priority (sheets, pillows, sleepwear), living room high priority (chargers, TV remote), and so on. The crew stacks and unloads accordingly.

The morning after

The measure of a well-planned move is how ordinary the first morning feels. You wake up in your own bed. The coffee maker is on the counter where you left the "open first" box. The essentials are in the bathroom. The rest of the boxes are waiting patiently, and unpacking becomes a pleasant weekend project instead of a survival exercise.
