Preparing Your Belongings for Short-Term Storage: A Practical Guide

Most storage stories aren't dramatic. A lease ends before the next one starts. A closing slips two weeks. A renovation runs long. An office consolidates before the new space is ready. In every one of them, a household or a workspace needs to spend a stretch of time somewhere that isn't home, and how it goes in decides how it comes out. Here's the practical prep, from a moving company that also does the storing.

Before the tips, one honest note: the storage this guide is about is the kind we run, climate-controlled, monitored around the clock, blanket-wrapped, and short-term by design. That's what protects wood, upholstery, and electronics through a Chicago January or an August humid week, and that's the standard the prep below assumes.

1. Inventory and label like you'll actually retrieve things

The single most common storage regret is a box someone can't find in a hurry.

Label every box with the room it came from and a short list of contents. Not "kitchen," but "kitchen: pans, small appliances, spice rack." A minute of labeling saves ten minutes of hunting later.

Keep a simple master list. A phone note or spreadsheet, one line per box, with the number written on the box itself. Sounds tedious; takes twenty minutes for a small household and makes the retrieval trip painless.

Think about access order. Anything you might need sooner, off-season clothes, kids' things, that one appliance you meant to bring, goes toward the front of the stack, not the back. The last things in are the easiest things out.

2. Clean and dry, always

Moisture and dust are the enemies of stored anything, and both are avoidable with an hour of prep.

Wipe hard surfaces before they go in. Desks, dressers, tables, appliances. Oils, food residue, and skin oils sit against surfaces for weeks and can leave marks that don't come off.

Dry appliances completely. Coffee makers, kettles, blenders, dishwashers, refrigerators; anything with a water reservoir or a seal. A closed appliance with residual moisture invites mold and smell. Leave doors slightly ajar going into storage where possible, and pull ice-maker lines before a fridge is moved.

Vacuum upholstery. Crumbs and dust in cushions attract pests over a stay of any length. A quick pass on the couch before it's wrapped is enough.

3. Wrap and pack for the stay, not just the trip

Packing for a move and packing for storage look similar and aren't quite the same. A trip lasts hours; storage lasts weeks. Two things change with time:

Use breathable blankets on wood, not plastic wrap. Shrink wrap is excellent for holding drawers shut and cushioning furniture through a truck ride, but wrapped tight around finished wood for weeks, it can trap ambient moisture against the surface, what refinishers call "sweating." Moving blankets breathe. On wooden pieces going into storage, blankets go on, and shrink wrap only over the blankets, not against the wood.

Match box sizes for a stable stack. Mismatched boxes don't stack; they lean, and a leaning stack settles into a collapsing stack. Heavy items at the base, light on top. Books, dishpacks, and heavy small boxes form the foundation. Bedding, lampshades, and light bulky items ride at the top. A well-built stack takes a fraction of the floor space of a random one, and nothing gets crushed.

4. Electronics and screens

The most common damage in storage is the kind that happens because someone treated a monitor like a picture frame.

Detach every cable before it's stored. Cords bagged and labeled by device beat cords tangled behind a stack you can't reach. It also prevents port damage from cables getting bent while boxes shift.

Store screens upright, not flat. Monitors, TVs, and laptops all have layers inside that don't love being pressed on for weeks. Vertical is how they were designed to sit. If you have the original box, that's ideal; if not, our TV Armor covers keep them safe standing up.

Pull batteries where you can. Remotes, wireless mice, cordless tools. Batteries left inside devices for extended stretches can leak; it's a small habit that prevents a big headache.

5. Keep the whole chain with one company
