October Moving in Chicago. The Last Comfortable Weeks of the Year

October Moving in Chicago: The Last Comfortable Weeks of the Year
If you have any flexibility on your moving date, October is one of the best months on the Chicago calendar to move. The weather cooperates (usually), the peak-season rush has passed, and crews aren't as booked-out as they were in August. The catch is that it doesn't last: by early November, the Chicago weather starts turning, and by Thanksgiving, winter is a real consideration.
Here's why October moves make sense in Chicago, what to expect, and how to plan around the specific realities of a fall move in the city.
Why October is genuinely a good month to move
Three specific reasons October moves are often the smoothest of the year:
The weather cooperates. Average Chicago October daytime temperatures run from the low 60s early in the month down to the low 50s by the end. Rain is not unusual but rarely torrential. The extreme heat and humidity of July and August are gone. Crews work more efficiently and less tired in October's cool weather.
The peak has passed. October 1st is Chicago's single busiest moving day of the year. After that, the volume drops off substantially. Movers have more availability, buildings are less crowded with move-in coordination, and the whole ecosystem breathes easier.
Buildings are back to normal. October 1st stretches most Chicago apartment buildings' capacity for moves. By mid-October, freight elevator availability opens up, COI turnaround times shorten, and dock scheduling gets simpler.
The window is short, honestly
October in Chicago is comfortable but not endless. Here's the realistic weather trajectory:
Early October (through about the 15th). Reliably nice for moves. Mid-60s to low 70s. Rain is possible but usually manageable.
Mid-October (16th-25th). Cooler but still workable. Mid-50s to mid-60s. Frost starts becoming possible overnight.
Late October (26th onward). Genuinely fall. Highs in the 50s, occasional dropping into the 40s. First hard frost typically by the end of the month. Rain events sometimes bring winds.
By November 1st. Winter is coming. Highs in the 40s or 50s, overnight temperatures near freezing, first snow possible.
For the smoothest October move, aim for the first half of the month. Late October moves are fine but come with more weather-related risk.
Practical considerations for October moves
Salt is not needed yet, but is a smart week-of check. By late October, overnight frost can leave surfaces slick in the morning. If you have front steps, decks, or driveway approaches, verify they're not iced when the crew arrives.
The kids' school year is settled. October is not a family-move peak precisely because most school-year families have already moved. This works in your favor if you're a single professional or a couple; more availability across the moving crew calendar.
Utilities transitions are typically smooth. No summer HVAC surges, no winter emergency shutoffs; October is one of the calmer months for utility switchovers.
Sun sets earlier. October sunset is around 6:30 PM at the start of the month and 6 PM by month's end. If your move day is long, plan for the last of the loading or unloading to happen in early evening rather than daylight.
Lake effect isn't yet in season. By late October, occasional lake-effect weather starts becoming possible, but it's not the reliable pattern of December through February. For most October moves, standard Chicago weather planning applies.
What October moves look like at both ends
Chicago-to-Chicago moves. Standard within-city moves in October usually run cleanly. Buildings and permit parking are more available than in August or September. Freight elevator windows book easier.
Chicago-to-suburb moves. For families moving to the North Shore, Northwest suburbs, or DuPage, October is often the quiet season after summer school-family peaks. Suburbs are just as available.
Suburb-to-Chicago moves. Empty-nester downsizings, retirees moving back into the city, are more common in fall than in summer. Same principle: more crew availability, easier logistics.
Booking an October move
Book 4-6 weeks ahead. October moves need less lead time than summer moves. 4-6 weeks is usually sufficient for a well-organized move.
Weekday moves book easily. Weekday October moves in Chicago are typically low-demand; crew availability is strong.
Weekends fill first. Even in October, Saturdays and Sundays fill earlier than weekdays. If your date has flexibility, midweek moves get you the best crew and most comfortable schedule.
What to send us for an October move quote
For any Chicago move, in-person or video walkthrough is best:
- Both addresses
- The building type at each end
- The floor you're moving to and from
- Whether the block needs a posted parking permit
- Any building rules (COI, freight elevator, move-in fees)
- Any large or specialty pieces
Same guidance as any Chicago move; see our complete guide to booking a move in the city.
The October vs November debate
If you have flexibility between an October move and a November move:
October is smoother almost always. More comfortable temperatures, less winter risk, more crew availability.
November has slight cost advantages in some markets (though our rates don't shift by month, so this isn't a Chicago consideration for us).
October beats November for family moves. Kids' schedules are more settled in October than in November, when Thanksgiving and pre-holiday planning starts consuming everyone's attention.
For Chicago moves specifically, if you can choose, October wins.
The rare weather event
October in Chicago occasionally serves up a genuinely bad weather day: heavy rain, unusually early snow, high winds. It's rare but real. For any October move, watch the forecast in the days before. If a serious weather event is coming through, ask us about rescheduling; most reputable movers will accommodate.
