Moving with Pets in Chicago: A Complete Guide for a Calm Move

Your dog doesn't know you got a bigger place. Your cat has no idea the new kitchen gets better light. From where your pets sit, the home they've memorized is disappearing into cardboard, the furniture keeps moving, and the people are acting strange. Pets run on routine, and a move is the loudest possible interruption of it, which is why the animals are so often the most stressed members of a moving household.

The good news: a little planning takes most of that stress out. After four decades of moving Chicago families, furry members included, here's what actually works.

1. Update the ID and grab the records

Do this first, because it's the one with real stakes. A move is statistically when pets are most likely to slip out and get lost, and an ID pointing at your old address helps nobody. Update the microchip registry, get a collar tag with your current phone number, and pick up a physical copy of vaccination records from your vet. If you're changing areas, you'll want those records to register with a new clinic anyway, and some Chicago buildings and suburbs ask for proof of vaccination on their own.

2. Keep the routine boring

In the weeks before the move, hold the line on feeding times, walk times, and play. The boxes can pile up around a steady routine and most pets will cope; break the routine and even a calm animal starts pacing. Boring is the kindest thing you can give them right now.

3. Pack a pet essentials bag

Your pet needs an overnight bag just like you do, packed last and opened first. In it: three to five days of food and water, bowls, leash and waste bags, medications, grooming basics, a favorite toy or two, and, most important, a blanket or bed that smells like the old home. Familiar smell is how animals decide a place is safe, so don't wash that blanket until everyone's settled.

4. Have a moving-day plan for them

Moving day means propped-open doors and constant foot traffic, which is exactly the wrong environment for a loose animal. The two good options: a sitter or boarding for the day, or a quiet room in the house that's already been emptied, with their bed, water, and the door closed. If they're staying on site, put a sign on that door so nobody opens it, and tell the crew. Our crews work around a marked pet room all the time; we'd much rather know than meet your cat at the front door. And if the room's contents need to go last, we'll simply sequence the load that way.

5. Introduce the new home gradually

At the new place, resist opening every door and letting them explore. Set up one room first as home base, their bed, their unwashed blanket, food and water, and let them own that room before the rest of the house exists. Cats especially need this; dogs usually graduate faster. Over a few days, the territory expands, and the new place quietly becomes theirs.
