Glenview Movers: A Guide for New Homeowners on the North Shore
Glenview is one of Chicagoland's most sought-after suburban addresses, and for good reason: excellent schools, a strong downtown, a range of housing from starter homes to substantial estates, and the still-being-developed master-planned community of The Glen. It sits about 20 miles north of downtown Chicago, in Cook County, sandwiched between Northbrook and Wilmette on the North Shore.
If you're moving to or from Glenview, here's what a real move actually looks like from a crew's perspective.
Where Glenview sits
Glenview's location shapes several practical realities. It's about a 40-50 minute drive from our Elston Avenue base in normal conditions, longer during rush hour on the Edens Expressway. The Metra Milwaukee District North line runs through town, connecting to Union Station in downtown Chicago, and the Glenview station is a real commuter hub.
The village is bigger than most people expect. Depending on how you count, Glenview covers roughly 14 square miles, and the housing varies dramatically depending on where in the village you are.
The housing mix
Glenview's housing stock has several distinct patterns:
Older single-family homes near downtown Glenview. Streets around Waukegan Road and the Metra station have vintage housing with character: brick colonials, split-levels, and ranches from the 1950s and 1960s. Many have been updated significantly over the years, but the original layouts remain.
Newer construction throughout the village. As Glenview has grown, newer construction has filled in throughout, ranging from teardown-and-rebuild scenarios on established streets to full new developments.
The Glen master-planned community. On the site of the former Glenview Naval Air Station, The Glen is a large mixed-use development with homes, townhomes, condos, a shopping district (Tower Square), and other amenities. The Glen has its own moving considerations: wider streets, easier truck access, but sometimes HOA rules that require notification or specific timing.
Larger estate homes on the village's northern edge and near Wagner Farm. Bigger lots, larger homes, sometimes with detached garages or workshops.
Some condos and townhomes in specific developments, including some near the Metra station and in The Glen.
Each of these moves differently, and the walkthrough at the estimate is where the specifics get sorted.
The school factor
Glenview's schools are one of the primary reasons families move here, and they drive a huge portion of the moving calendar.
Glenview School District 34 serves K-8 for most of the village. Glenbrook South High School (District 225) serves Glenview's high school students.
The school year starts in late August, so families moving with school-age kids overwhelmingly target July and August moves to be settled before classes start. This means these months are the busiest for Glenview movers.
School registration is one of the first tasks on the new-family checklist. District 34 has specific documentation requirements; get the paperwork started as soon as your closing date is confirmed.
If you're moving during August specifically, book at least 6-8 weeks ahead. It's the peak.
Truck access
For most Glenview homes, truck access is straightforward:
- Wide residential streets in most subdivisions
- Driveways that accommodate moving trucks in most single-family homes
- The Glen's newer construction offers particularly easy access
Exceptions to watch for:
- Longer driveways at some larger estate homes, especially in the northern part of the village
- Gated communities in a few developments, coordinate gate codes ahead of moving day
- Older downtown streets near the Metra station can have tighter parking
The downtown Glenview logistics
If your move involves an address near downtown Glenview (Waukegan Road, Glenview Road, or the surrounding blocks near the Metra station), a few notes:
Parking near the station competes with commuter traffic during rush hour. Morning moves are easier if you're near the station.
The downtown itself has been developed with restaurants and shops on Waukegan Road, which means real foot traffic in the evenings and on weekends. This doesn't derail moves, but it changes the feel of the block.
Some downtown condos have building rules similar to Chicago high-rises: freight elevator windows, COI requirements, off-hours restrictions. Confirm with your building.
The Glen specifically
Moving into or out of The Glen has some specific considerations:
Wide streets and easy truck access. This is a genuinely mover-friendly community.
HOA notifications. Some sub-developments require notification of moves; check the HOA rules ahead of time.
Tower Square shopping district access if your address is near it, minor consideration for parking on shopping-heavy weekend days.
Community events. The Glen hosts community events throughout the year; moving day on a major event day can add traffic. Check the community calendar.
Timing
Peak season: July and August for family moves, May through September more broadly.
Slower periods: late fall through winter. January and February especially have more open scheduling.
Book earlier than you would for a Chicago move. Suburban moves fill faster during peak, and Glenview's family-driven demand skews heavily toward the school calendar.
Cost drivers for a Glenview move

Home size. Glenview homes tend to be larger than Chicago apartments. More inventory, more time.
